Improving articles

Everyone can edit articles and other pages on Wikipedia. So if you see something incorrect with a page just click Edit this page and correct it.

To talk about ways to improve an article further, use the Discussion tab displayed when you are viewing that page (see Wikipedia:Talk page for more information).

Vandalism

Since Wikipedia is a wiki we get our share of vandalism. If you see vandalism to a page then please revert the page to its last version (see: Wikipedia:How to revert a page to an earlier version for details). If you do that and the user is still vandalizing pages, then please alert other Wikipedians about this on our Vandalism in progress page. Then, if needed, a Wikipedia Administrator may block the IP address or user name of the vandal.

Deleting and restoring pages

If you think that a certain page should be completely deleted, tell why at Votes for deletion. If you feel that a page was deleted by mistake or unfairly, argue your case at Votes for undeletion.

Wikipedia users

To learn more about a Wikipedia user, click on their name to view their user page. To talk to someone on Wikipedia, go to their user page and click Discussion. Many people provide further contact information (email, instant messaging, etc) on their user page while others do not. If you want to contact many Wikipedia users at once, you may find it best to subscribe and post to the mailing list (wikien-l at wikimedia.org) or to post to the Village pump.

General questions about Wikipedia

As always, the Wikipedia Wikipedia:FAQ is a good place to start when looking for information. Every page (article pages, policy pages, user pages) also has its own Discussion page, and that's often the best place for questions that are specific to a single topic or user.

Other than that, there are 3 areas for general questions:

The Village pump is the community's central gathering point. It is a location for friendly questions, discussions, theory, planning, and more. If in doubt, post at the Village Pump first; questions that do not belong there will be sent somewhere else, with a pointer left behind to direct you to the place where answers can be found.

Questions about the functions and structure of Wikipedia itself, especially "how to", "why to", "why do we do it that way?" etc., can best be answered at the Wikipedia:Help Desk.

If you want to consult the collective wisdom of the Wikipedia community on any subject, there is also the Wikipedia:Reference desk. Like a library reference desk, the volunteer editors here will try to answer and point you to good sources of information on almost any topic (but remember, we're not here to do your homework for you!).

Remember to check the page on a regular basis to find out if you have received an answer.

Enquiries related to Wikimedia Foundation (and only to the Foundation) should be made by email to board@wikimedia.org (mailto:board@wikimedia.org).

If you need to contact someone privately about the English Wikipedia, you may email info-en@wikimedia.org (mailto:info-en@wikimedia.org) instead of using the Help desk. General questions not related to Wikipedia should go to the Reference desk.

Press inquiries

Press Inquiries to: +1-727-231-0101, tell Terry Foote what it is about and Wikimedia Foundation president Jimmy Wales will get back to you. Please use that number only for press inquiries! Press inquiries can also be made by email to jwales@wikia.com.

Reporters and other interested people are encouraged to send an email to our mailing list (mailto:wikien-l@wikipedia.org). If you are not a subscriber to this mailing list, then your email has to be approved by a mailing list administrator before it is posted to the list. If you plan to post many emails to the list, then please visit Wikipedia:Mailing lists for subscription information.

If you want to contact regular Wikipedians, Wikipedia:Wikipedians and Wikipedia:List of administrators would be good starting points.

Policy

Wikipedia policy can be discussed on the mailing lists, specifically wikien-l for the English Wikipedia and wikipedia-l for global project policy. English Wikipedia policies are codified at Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines.

Being blocked from editing

Sometimes it becomes necessary to block the IP address being used by a vandal (see above). Rarely, however, that vandal may share the same IP address with another person trying to edit Wikipedia.

If you are such a person, you should follow the directions on the 'Blocked user' message that is displayed when you try to edit. You can also directly contact a Wikipedia Administrator by visiting Wikipedia:Administrators#List of administrators (look for Administrators who have "email" links by their user names, then use those links).

Copyright questions

If you are the owner of content that is being used on Wikipedia without your permission, then please go here for instructions.

If you merely suspect that content on a particular page contains a copyright infringement, then you should follow the instructions here.

If you would like permission to use Wikipedia content, you should be happy to know that our license (the GNU Free Documentation License) already grants you permission to use it - even commercially. However, you do have to follow the terms of our license. Please see Wikipedia:Copyrights for details.

Wikipedia software

MediaWiki (http://wikipedia.sourceforge.net) is the general purpose wiki engine used by Wikipedia.
