WikiPedia:Concise
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
This is an attempt by some members of the Wikipedia community to create a "Concise Version" of Wikipedia by listing the "essential articles" of a small encyclopedia in one convenient place.
Most "concise encyclopedias," by definition, have at least 15,000 articles. As it is now, Wikipedia has over 500,000 articles and while this is clearly good, it is also somewhat unmanagable and overwhelming to people who are trying to use the encyclopedia as part of a course of homeschooling or autodidacticism (self education) or just general reading. We envision this page eventually listing the 10,000 to 20,000 or so "essential articles" of a small set of encyclopedias. We think this would be very useful because Wikipedia articles tend to be much better than the articles found in a small set of encyclopedias and much more detailed than anything that generally gets labled "concise"; hence, a "concise version" of Wikipedia could be very helpful to many people.
For more details on this very new project, or clarification of this idea, please click the discussion tab above.
Here is the beginning of the list, which will need a lot of work to complete.
Please add whatever links you think are appropriate to the list below, but as you add articles, please also keep the idea of "conciseness" in mind and resist the temptation to add minor, "micro-issues" to the list (see the discussion page for more on this distinction). Remember, this is an attempt to create a list of links to "essential articles," an attempt to gain easy access to the "core" articles of the encyclopedia, the articles that no encyclopedia can really do without. Hopefully, after reading one of these "keystone" articles, readers will follow links to the subcategories of these "big ideas."
Please also keep in mind that this is an alphabetical list and be sure to insert your entry in the correct place.
