University of Ouagadougou

The University of Ouagadougou was founded in 1974 with only 374 students. It was Burkina Faso's first institution of higher education. After its foundation the total number of students increased rapidly.
It opened a second campus for professional education in Bobo-Dioulasso in 1995, and a third for teacher training in Koudougou in 1996. It has been the only university in Burkina Faso until 1997, when the University of Bobo-Dioulasso was formally established as an autonomous institute.
In the academic year 2003-2004 it enrolled nearly 20.000 students. The permanent teaching staff numbers around 340 and the administrative and technical staff around 350.
