Background

Note: York's biography is difficult to determine, as much of the story he and his followers have revealed is mythical rather than historical.

In some versions, he claims that he is not "Dwight York" at all:

Dr. Malachi Z. York was born June 26th 1945 in Omdurman, Sudan to Faatimah Maryam whos english name is Mary C. York and Al Haadi Abdur Rahman Al Madhi. He was given the Arabic name "Isa" by his grandfather Salah Hailak Al Ghalat. As it is a custom in Sudan that the male members of the family to also have their father's name, he also aquired his father's name. His father's name being Al Haadi Abdur Rahman Al Madhi, may God rest his soul. His full name at birth was Isa Al Haadi Al Madhi and if you check the records in the Hall of Records in Sudan you will see that his birth was indeed recorded. No birth certificate was issued because one was not required by law as a Sudanese. I was raised in Massachusetts until the age of 7. At the age of 7 Shaikh Hasuwn escorted me to Aswan, Nubia in Wadi-Halfa to be with my mother’s family. My father had appointed Shaikh Hasuwn to be my guardian. His job was to protect and properly raise me in Al Islaam. He would escort me to Omdurman and Abaa Island to visit and stay with my father and grandfather. My grandfather, As Sayyid Abdur Rahman Al Mahdi, the Imaam of the Ansaars in the Sudan until 1959 AD, upon looking into my eyes foretold that I was the one who would possess “the light.” It was here where I was raised by Shaikh Hasuwn and my uncle on my mother’s side, Abdullah. I returned to the United States, State Street (Mosque) to be exact at the age of 12 in the year 1957 AD. He served three years in prison in the mid-1960s for resisting arrest, assault and possession of a dangerous weapon.

In the late 1960s York, calling himself "Amunnnubi Rooakhptah," invented a quasi-muslim black nationalist movement based on something called the "Science of Nuwaubu." (One description says that Nuwaubu consists of right knowledge, right wisdom, and right "overstanding" — "To know is knowledge. Knowledge is mental power. Knowledge is correct information and now out-formation. Of course, knowledge can be thought, spoken, or written. Knowledge is the best information. Wisdom is knowing how and when to use knowledge. Overstanding is receipt of knowledge by the mind and is the unity of knowledge and wisdom.")

He changed his name to "Imaam Isa" and started his "Ansaar Pure Sufi" ministry to the "Nubians" in Brooklyn. The group became the "Nubian Islaamic Hebrews" in 1969.

After York returned from a pilgrimage to Egypt, the group went through additional name changes, becoming "Jazzir Abba," then the "Ansaaru Allah Community" in 1970 (which a 1993 FBI report accused of being a "front for a wide range of criminal activity, including arson, welfare fraud and extortion."). York's groups later took on a new array of names and functions — religious, fraternal, and tribal — including the "Yamassee Native American Tribe," the "Washitaw Tribe," "The International Egyptian Church," "The Holy Tabernacle Ministries," "The United Nuwaubian Nation Of Moors," the "Holy Seed Baptist Synagogue" and "the Ancient Mystic Order of Melchizedek," and York himself tried on a myriad of handles, including The Supreme Grand Master Dr. Malachi Z. York, Dr. Malachi Z. York-El, Nayya Malachizodoq-El, and Chief Black Eagle (the Nuwaubian Moors are descendants of the Olmecs via Egypt over an ancient land bridge to Georgia).

A Musical Career

York claims to have worked as a studio musician with groups like Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, The Delfonics and Evelyn 'Champagne' King. Then, as "Dr. York," he sang vocals on a solo project and for a band called "Passion," hoping to "reach a mass majority of my people through my music." He put out a single: "Shake-n-Skate" b/w "Roll-a-Rock".

He later frequently exaggerated his musical contributions, and stated at one point that "you were listening to my hits back in the 60’s and did not know it, nor did you know that songs which were considered 'message music' in the 70’s were written by me."[3] (http://www.factology.com/doc/written6.htm)

Religious & Philosophical Doctrine & Practice

Like his name, his affiliations, and his costume, Dwight York's philosophy is multifarious and ever-changing. It also has influences and borrowings from many sources - everything from a white new-age Blavatsky-influenced movement like Astara, to a paperback on fortune telling by rune casting, to a variety of religious sects and black racialist groups, to the ancient astronaut theories of Zecharia Sitchin to the UFO mythology of greys and reptilians and the like, to conspiracy theories about multiple cloned bodies of members of the Bilderberg Group, to hollow earth theories. A doctrine passionately stated in one place may be off-handedly dismissed in another.

He is considered by some of his followers to be a living god, and certainly at times he encourages this interpretation, though he may also sometimes suggest that he is merely channeling the divine:

I don’t sit around and make these things up. These are distinct personalities of people or beings, Who have lived in the past or in other galaxies inter-dimensional at this time called "NOW" who incarnated into me and they relay their messages through me to you. That is what makes me different from most people. I Am Not A Religious Man. I Am Just A Teacher. I have been saying this for many years. I am not saying that I am anything special as an individual. I am saying that these power comes through me and they are distinct beings.
I possessed a number of eight distinctive personalities, There are others. Each one of them represents a certain amount of information that must be conveyed in these last days and times. Black Nationalism / Racism

Some of York's thinking borrows from Moorish Science and the Nation of Islam. His racial philosophy explicitly indicates the supremacy of blacks, or "Melanites," who are superior in fact as well as in descent ("The Melanin-ites, the original woolly-haired, dark skinned Muurs, or 'Moors,' came along with the original creation"). The "Tama-Re" Compound

The "Tama-Re" compound in Georgia (a.k.a. "Wahannee", "The Golden City") was established in 1993. According to one page:

The name of the Nuwaubians' home is Tama-re, or the "Egypt of the West." At the entrance of Tama-re there is a large sign that recognizes the Nuwaubians as a fraternity, Lodge 19 of the Ancient Mystic Order of Melchizedek. Armed guards stand at the entrance to Tama-re. Approximately 100 Nuwaubians live within 15 double-wide trailers within this complex. There are approximately another 400 more Nuwaubians within Putnam County (population 14,000). At this current complex the Nuwaubians have constructed an Egyptian-style village with two pyramids, obelisks, and statues of Egyptian leaders. The two pyramids are distinct in appearance and in usage. There is a gold pyramid that serves as a trade center. Within this pyramid one can find a bookstore and a clothing store. The other pyramid is painted black with colorful Egyptian symbols painted on the outside. This structure serves as a church. The compound was the focus of much legal wrangling between the Nuwaubians and the government of Putnam County during the late 1990s and up to the time of York's arrest, much of it centered on zoning issues, and York claimed this as racially-based harassment. Civil rights personalities Al Sharpton, Tyrone Brooks and Jesse Jackson spoke out on the Nuwaubians' behalf.

In 2000, a security / paramilitary group called the Royal Guard Of Amen-Ra, Inc owned by actor Wesley Snipes's Amen Ra Films filed BATF papers in moves to set up a security training center next to the Tama-Re compound. The Nuwaubians claimed Snipes as one of their own, though a spokeswoman for Snipes denied any connection.

In June 2005, this flamboyantly-arrayed compound was sold under government forfeiture to Lawson Lawrence by the U.S. Marshals Service for 1.1 million dollars. On 9 June 2005 workers began demolishing the Egyptian-styled façades, with long-time Nuwaubian nemisis Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills starting the demolition by tearing down the front arch of the compound with a front-end loader.

Illyuwn and Rizq

York claims to be an extraterrestrial from the planet Rizq, in Illyuwn (the 19th galaxy), which "has 3 suns, UTU, SHAMASH and APSU; 38 Moons and 19 Planets."[9] (http://www.gtomessiah.com/illiyuwn.html) In his over-capitalized way of putting it: "We Have Been Coming To This Planet Before It Had Your Life Form On It. I Manifest Into This Body To Speak Through This Body. I Am A Entity An Etheric Being. We Watched The 3 Other Cycles Of 18,000 Years, Two Moons And One Sun Which Is Part Of Your 24,000 Year Cycle, The Equinox; The Removal Of The Dust Cloud From Light To Darkness Then To Light Again. I Incarnated Into This Realm From Time To Time. My Incarnation As An Ilah Mutajassid Or Avatara Was Originally In The Year 1945 A.D. York came to Earth on 16 March, 1970. (Comet Bennett, which was visible on that date, is said to have really been York's spacecraft):

York told his followers that a spacecraft from Illyuwn would return on 5 May, 2003 to take him and 144,000 Nuwaubians to the planet Rizq. That date, which landed while York was in jail during his child molestation trial, passed without incident.

The superficial similarity of these beliefs to those of the Heaven's Gate cult led to many a worried newspaper article after that cult's mass suicide, but York's cosmology seems to have more resemblance to that of the less-suicidal Frank Chu.

Another source says: "York's scripture claims our human ancestors originally came from the planet Rizq. They later moved to a planet called Kesiyl in the Orion constellation, then to Mars (the canals on Mars was said to have been built then), then to Pluto and finally to Earth." The Barathary Gland

York taught that humans (other than York himself) were missing an important part of their brains, the "barathary gland" (sometimes "baradjedi" or "barathory"), which once enabled various forms of extra-sensory perception, or, as he would have it, normal sensory perception that is currently disabled in humans.

The Barathary Gland resided inside the Hippocampus area, which is a cavity of the cerebellum. The Cerebellum is located at the lower part of the brain and is attached to the brain stem. The Barathary Gland has connections with the appendix and the tonsils. The Hippocampus is the tissue which held the barathary gland when it was once inside Zakar's (Adam's) The grandfather of ENOS' brain. Although conscious perception does not occur in the cerebellum this is the part of the brain that is responsible for hallucinations. Also the reactions of the cerebellum are unconscious (meaning you are unaware that it happened) and that is why even though the Barathary gland is missing, portions of the gland were left on the nerve endings because total removal would have damaged the nerve from the cerebellum. You had five complete senses: touch(the 'senses' you have now only go under touch--light touches the retina to see, sound vibrations touch the ear drum to hear, etc.) mind perception (intuition), mental communication (telepathy), object reading (psychometry), and clear/clair sight - to see into other dimensions (clairvoyance). Costume

It's mostly an explanation for why the various clothing-related taboos and requirements of the cult changed so radically throughout the years, and why this is not an indication of the instability of the Nuwaubian doctrine.

[o]ur official garb at this time was a black tunic, we called a budlah and black loose fitting pants, with a tarbush and shoes which became known as Romeos. Convicted of Child Molestation

In 2002, York was arrested and charged with over a hundred counts of sexually molesting dozens of children, some as young as four years old. He pled guilty in 2003 in a plea bargain that was later dismissed by the judge, and then was convicted on 23 January 2004 — the judge having rejected his desire to be returned for trial to his own tribe: "All I am asking is that the court recognize that I am an indigenous person. He was convicted of multiple RICO, child molestation, and financial reporting charges and sentenced to 135 years in prison. His case is currently under appeal in the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. Malik Zulu Shabazz of the New Black Panther Party is among those working on the appeal.

In October 2004, he wrote a letter from prison to his followers that referenced verses in the Christian Bible in which Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness and abused by people during his ministry. The letter read, in part:

On August 12, 2004, just days before court, 3 visitors came to me, Crlll, Alomar, and Saad, they healed me. They came from Zeta Reticuli. I had not seen them since I was a child in Teaneck, New Jersey. They don’t age at all. Anyway, they told me the game is almost over. Those that truly love you are coming together for you. They are passing the Great Test. I asked them why I could not just walk out? They said, “Because there is an order to the Kosmos that must never be altered” .... Many inmates have seen me float. His followers now claim that not only should York be considered immune from prosecution due to his status as an sovereign aboriginal Native American Moor, but also since 1999 York has been a Consul General of Monrovia, Liberia under appointment from President Charles Taylor and should be given diplomatic immunity from prosecution.

Another defense claims that while the government successfully prosecuted "Dwight D. York," the person they have in prison is "Malachi Z. York" and that these are two different people and that Malachi Z. York should not be punished for Dwight D. York's crimes.
