Toktu

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Toktu was Khan of Bulgaria between 766 and 767

Patriarch Nicephorus I said for Toktu that he was “a Bulgarian, brother of Bayan”. That makes his brother a famous man, but unfortunately there is no more information about him.

Khan Toktu was among the anti-Byzantium camp in the Bulgarian nobility, but his rule did not last long. He faced a fierce internal opposition and had to run for safety from Bulgaria. It is interesting that he tried to escape not South to Byzantium, but North across from the Danube. He, his brother Bayan and their supporters were killed there.
