This Place Hotel

Originally named "Heartbreak Hotel", "This Place Hotel" was a hit recording by The Jacksons when it was released in 1980.

One of lead singer Michael's self-authored songs showcasing the horror and mystery themes that had begun to crept into his music. The song was a perfect example of his growth shortly after the release of his 1979 solo breakthrough, Off the Wall.

The song would precede Jackson's own hit, "Billie Jean" which was still a couple years away. In the meantime, though, the song was considered one of the 22-year-old singer-songwriter's best songwriting efforts.

While his brothers didn't share background, they took part of the musical accompaniment playing various instruments (as did Michael). The song reached #22 on the Billboard pop singles chart when it was released and became the group's second biggest single off their Triumph album. The song, in turn, became a popular concert performance for the group's next two tours right into Michael's own "Bad" tour.

The song, like the aforementioned "Can You Feel It", has become one of the oft-sampled songs in hip-hop.
