The leader of the Tainui Māori is known as the Māori Queen or King. This is a non-constitutional role. The current Māori Queen, Te Atairangi Kaahu, is of the line of the first Māori King, Pōtatau Te Wherowhero and was elected in 1966.

The official residence is Turongo House in Turangawaewae in the Waikato.
