Mains

Mains has a number of meanings:
- The "main" cables or pipes used by public utilities ("mains services" in British English), including electricity, gas, water, and sewage disposal), and typically buried under streets. Usually singular in American English, e.g. "sewer main".
- In British English, the service supplied through such pipes or cables, especially electricity: e.g. "my laptop is currently running on mains electricity" or "my drill runs off the mains". An American equivalent might be "house power" or "household power".
- A special type of mains are traction power networks for the supply of electric trains with traction current, used in Germany, Austria, Switzerland ,and the United States.
- The central steading of a townland (fermland)
