Welcome to the index of political parties, an alphabetical list of (mainly) present-day political parties listed in the list of political parties. Only parties active on a national level are included. Local and regional parties are only included when they are also active on a national level. Generally defunct parties and micro-parties are not included. A political party is defined here as a political organization subscribing to a certain ideology or formed around very special issues with the aim to participate in power, usually by participating in elections. (see political party for a more comprehensive discussion.)

Introduction to the index

The lists consists of two sub-lists.

  • The first list is an alphabetical list of party names in English (also when the native name is more commonly used). Each party name is or will be followed when available followed by the native name. Some remarks:
    • If parties share the same name, these parties are listed in country order, whereby in the party name the extension of country is ignored.
    • When the first word in a party name refers to the country, the party is also listed with the second word (eg. Barbados Labour Party and Labour Party).
    • If there are alternative translations possible, the party is listed with these alternative translations too (eg. Danish Social Liberal Party and Radical Left).
    • In the translations Labour is used and not Labor, Centre and not Center, Organisation and not Organization.
    • If The is the first word in a party name, it is listed under with the second word (eg. the Greens, The).
  • The second list is an alphabetical list of party names in native languages when these names are more commonly used in English-speaking sources. The party names are followed by translations into English.
