Participating teams
- Germany (host)
- Brazil (winner of the 2002 World Cup)
- Argentina1 (runner-up to Brazil in the 2004 Copa América)
- Greece (winner of Euro 2004)
- Mexico (winner of the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup)
- Tunisia (winner of the 2004 African Nations Cup)
- Japan (winner of the 2004 Asian Cup)
- Australia (winner of the 2004 Oceania Nations Cup)
1Argentina was awarded a spot in the competition because Brazil had won both the 2002 World Cup and the 2004 Copa América. Since both competitions award their winners a spot in the Confederations Cup, the runner-up in the World Cup would be called to play. Said runner-up, however, was Germany, which already had a spot as hosts of the 2005 Confederations Cup. Argentina, as the runner-up in the Copa América, was then granted a place in the 2005 edition of the tournament.
Venues
Matches will be held in Hanover, Leipzig, Cologne, Nuremberg and Frankfurt.
