Borisoglebsk
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Borisoglebsk is a Russian advanced Delta III SSBN nuclear submarine. On 21 June 2005 the vessel served as the the launch platform for a missile carrying a payload containing a solar sail experiment, the Cosmos 1.
In March 1993, the Borisoglebsk and the US Navy's Graling (also a nuclear submarine) collided. Reports point to the Graling having lost track of the Borisoglebsk while following it, and pulling up to speed to rendezvous at the point of loss, hit the submarine. The Russian submarine was moving much more slowly (approximately 4 knots) when the US submarine collided at 8 to 10 knots. The collision could be the result of the acoustics used to locate the other submarine, and it was not until the distance was too close that either party realized a collision was imminent.
