Abancay

Abancay is a city in Peru, located in the central Andes. It is the capital of the Apurímac Region and the Abancay Province and has a population of 44,571 (1999). The city is located on the Apurímac River.
Abancay was already a populated area before the arrival of the Incas. When the Spanish arrived, they named the city Amancay, Villa de los Reyes ("Amancay, Town of Kings").
The city and its surroundings have some beautiful landscapes, such as those in the Ampay National Sanctuary, located north of the city.
Abancay has one university, the Universidad Particular Tecnológica de los Andes.
