Banu Tamim

The Banu Tamim is a large and powerful Arab tribe found predominately in the Najd area of the Arabian peninsula as well as the Basra and Diyala regions of Iraq. Members of this tribe are identifiable by the surnames of "Al-Tamimi", which is sometimes spelt "Al-Timimi" or "Al-Temimi" in reflection of the local accent.
The progenitor of the tribe Tamim ibn (son of) Murr and through Tamim ibn Murr the tribe links its origin to Ishmael the son of Abraham. It is said that Tamim ibn Murr lived around the time of Christ and met one of Christ's disciples.
A famous member of this tribe is Muhammad ibn Abdul-Wahhab. The current rulers of Qatar, the Al Thanis, are also members of this tribe.
