Baby New York

(Redirected from "Baby New York")

"Baby New York" is an offensive nickname for the City of Philadelphia. It attained nation-wide recognition as a result of several television ads in 2004 referring to the City of Brotherly Love in that manner. However, its use extends back to at least the Twentieth Century when citizens of New York mocked their smaller neighbor to the south. The nickname refers to the fact that Philadelphia is the second largest city in the Mid-Atlantic States (the largest being New York).

Native Philadelphians are outraged by the comparison implied in the phrase. They see themselves and their city as culturally very different from New York City.
